In 2011, Bridgespan conducted a third-party assessment of Bank of America Charitable Foundation Neighborhood Builders program designed to ascertain the program’s impact and identify opportunities for improvement.

Context

The Neighborhood Builders® program is the nation's largest philanthropic leadership development program for nonprofit executives. The program provides unrestricted grants and two to three weeks of leadership development training for nearly 100 community-based nonprofits annually.

Bridgespan's Role

In 2011, Bridgespan conducted a third-party assessment of the Neighborhood Builders program designed to ascertain the program's impact and identify opportunities for improvement.

Impact

The assessment found that the Neighborhood Builders training had significantly helped nonprofit leaders, particularly emerging leaders, grow as individuals and become more effective leaders. Further, the training and award enabled Builder organizations to improve capacity in critical areas and leverage other funding. Gains had also improved over time as a result of changes made by Bank of America in response to participant feedback. Lastly, the assessment highlighted opportunities to strengthen the program, including an enhancement of the program's follow-on services to better leverage the large network of alumni leaders across the country.
