Devin Murphy

Devin Murphy is a partner in The Bridgespan Group's New York office. He is a thought leader and expert advisor on issues at the intersection of equity, economic opportunity, and building power in communities. Since joining Bridgespan in 2008, he has led several significant advisory and knowledge-generation projects focused on breaking cycles of intergenerational poverty and advancing racial equity. His clients have included institutional foundations, high-net-worth individuals, funding collaboratives, and a broad range of nonprofit organizations focused on critical areas, including early childhood development, K-12 and postsecondary education, youth development, and workforce development. He also is a leader of Bridgespan's internal inclusive culture and racial equity efforts at Bridgespan.

Devin's philanthropy advising engagements have included foundation-wide strategy development and portfolio alignment with the Ford Foundation and Omidyar Network; program and initiative level strategy with Hewlett Foundation (US Democracy Program), Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (Postsecondary Success), Kendeda Fund (Atlanta Equity portfolio), and Kellogg Foundation (Battle Creek team); and racial equity strategy and operations support for Blue Meridian Partners.

Devin's nonprofit consulting engagements have included national network design and renewal projects with Communities in Schools, United Way Worldwide, and Reading Partners; early childhood and youth development strategies with the Harlem Children's Zone, TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health; and support of national and locally-focused place-based intermediaries (My Brother's Keeper Alliance, Commit Partnership Dallas).

Devin has co-authored several publications focused on issues of poverty alleviation, equity, and social capital including "Elevating the Role of Faith-Inspired Impact in the Social Sector," and “Billion Dollar Bets' to Create Economic Opportunity for Every American," a series of articles outlining 15 philanthropic opportunities for increasing economic mobility. Devin's recommendations related to economic mobility have been cited in Forbes, Stanford Social Innovation Review, and theAtlantic.com.

Devin spent a year as an associate partner at Entangled Solutions--an innovation and strategy consulting firm focused on the education ecosystem-- where he focused on building innovation capacity for non-profits, foundations, and higher education institutions. Before joining Bridgespan, Devin completed coursework and qualifying exams with distinction in the American Studies doctoral program at New York University. Devin's field concentrations are in 20th-century social movements and political theory. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate, Devin earned a BA with highest honors in Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture from Emory University.
