Brian Burwell

Brian Burwell is a partner in the San Francisco office. He joined Bridgespan in 2016 to follow his passion and commitment to make a difference on social issues working with leading nonprofit organizations, foundations, and philanthropists.
 
Brian’s focus is in the philanthropy practice where he brings his particular experience in education and healthcare while expanding his focus to encompass all issues and solutions critical to breaking cycles of poverty.
 
Brian brings extensive management consulting experience working with some of the world's leading corporations and nonprofit organizations on strategy, execution, organization, and leadership. Brian's experience has spanned six continents and numerous industries, including healthcare, consumer products, retail, hospitality and education. Brian is co-author of the article "Winning on Climate Change: How Philanthropy Can Spur Major Progress over the Next Decade" (Bridgespan.org, 2023).

Prior to joining Bridgespan Brian spent over 35 years as a partner at Marakon where he also served as CEO and was a member of its San Francisco, London, New York, and Melbourne offices. Prior to Marakon, Brian was a research manager with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and an economist with a research group at the University of California, Davis.
 
Brian is deeply involved with sports, charitable, and educational organizations. He is on the board of a San Francisco based software company, on the Dean’s advisory council at the University of California, Davis, and continues to serve as a senior advisor for Marakon.
 
Brian received his BA in economics from the University of California at Davis and his MBA from Stanford University. He and his wife, Beatrice are the parents of three adult sons, and grandparents of two girls and a boy.
